At any point in your learning journey, you should spend time in the following three skill zones with about equal amount of time:
Expert: skills you’ve mastered and can execute with confidence. These are the areas where you create the most value and lead others.
Proficient: skills you’re actively strengthening. You’re capable but still refining and improving.
Beginner: skills that stretch you. Here, as you learn you ask more questions than you answer.
Working across these three levels keeps you balanced. Mastery builds confidence. Growth builds momentum. Beginner status builds humility.
Staying only in your area of expertise can lead to stagnation. Staying only in beginner mode can be overwhelming. The combination creates steady growth and perspective.
What are you working on in each of the zones?
