If It Is Hard For You, It Is Hard For Everyone

May 12, 2026 Roberto Reif

Imagine two hikers standing at the base of a mountain. Both look up, the trail is steep, the weather uncertain, and the peak hidden behind clouds. One hiker sighs, “This looks impossible,” and walks away. The other takes a deep breath and starts climbing, one careful step at a time.

Now here’s the thing, they were both right! The climb was hard. But only one of them gave themselves the chance to find out what was waiting at the top.

When we face challenges such as learning to code, mastering data visualization, or building a new habit, it’s easy to think we’re struggling because we’re not good enough. But the truth is, if it’s hard for you, it’s hard for everyone. The difficulty isn’t a personal flaw; it’s a shared human experience.

Most people quit when things get uncomfortable. They stop right before the moment where growth happens. That’s why persistence, not talent, often becomes the ultimate differentiator.

When I was first learning Python, I spent hours debugging a single error that turned out to be a missing parenthesis. I remember thinking, “If this is what coding is like, I’ll never make it.” But over time, I realized that every data scientist I admired had gone through the same frustration, the same typos, the same broken code, the same moments of doubt.

The key was simply to keep climbing. To go a little farther than most people are willing to go.

So, when you encounter something that feels hard, whether it’s statistics, machine learning, or life itself, take comfort in knowing you’re not alone. The struggle means you’re doing something meaningful.

And remember, the mountain doesn’t get easier, but you get stronger.

Have you ever overcome a difficult challenge?
